2015 out of State ideas?
« on: July 02, 2015, 03:35:35 PM »

I got a call from a buddy the other day and he asked if I knew any place we could hunt rifle elk in September? Well obviously not in WA..........He has a few more $$ in the bank than me and is willing to cover the cost of a guided hunt.

Ideas? If you got that call where would you start looking for guides that would still have tags or I guess which states can you still get over the counter tags in?  I have not hunted elk out of state before....

Thanks

Not a lot of states offer rifle rut hunts unless they are on private ranches and those can get downright spendy. I am also not a fan of "high fence" type hunts but to each their own. I do know that Montana has some wilderness areas where you can hunt elk with a rifle and I believe Wyoming does too. If it were me, I would start planning for a 2016 hunt instead of rushing into this year.  :twocents:

Maybe for the same price as an outfitter, try buying a new mexico higher dollar land owner tag for say muzzleloader which can be scoped and use the shot primers.  Diy hunt mabe an option on prime ground at the end of the rut.  If not probably a montana wilderness hunt or such wich you could buy both elk and deer.

Check Montana Bob Marshall.  I think you could rifle hunt September and it would be a great place to go guided.

Thanks Fellas,

We are 100% looking for a guided hunt, I have never done a can hunt and that's not what I am looking for here either...Looking for a fair chase elk opportunity but since we dont know the where that's why we would hire a guide.

This late in the year you have few options but I would start getting a hold of outfitters that guide in the bob right away.  I think there use to be an outfitter that use to advertise on this site that guides in the bob.  And MT still has elk tags for sale.

 way to live life.....idaho has lots of tags for October 10th...which isn't prime rut but there is still.some rutting action

There should be cancelation hunts available in Montana and Wyoming for September.....start making as many phone calls as possible and get your name on a list

What you want are either the selway or middle fork zone B tags, both have a sept 15th-30th season. Those zones are wilderness but you shouldn't have much issue finding an outfitter. And with both of those zones if you have no luck in September they both have late seasons in November if you have the ability to make a 2nd trip

MuledHunter I started looking B.C. first but when I started researching I got on some Canada forms kinda like this one and it sounded like the Territory was having issues with both game management and unscrupulous guides.........I have been on two Canadian Moose hunts over the years....In 2005 me and My father had a great trip up by Fort Smith area then in 2009 we hunted out of Prince George and it was a shameful hunt to say the least.........The Prince George area outfitter is or was the head of the Guide association.

If I knew or if anybody knew of a reputable outfitter in either B.C. or Alberta I would certainly entertain the option.

There's some leftover over the counter tags in Wyoming.  Some are in difficult public access areas, so be mindful of that.

For September rifle hunts with over the counter tags try the Frank Church Wilderness in Idaho or the Bob Marshall in Montana. A friend of mine hunts the Bob with Sun Canyon Lodge every year and has done pretty well, they are on the east slope of the Bob. In Idaho Mile High Outfitters has a pretty good reputation, they are in the Frank out of Challis. You can google either of those and both states still have tags. Hope this helps, Good Luck!
